Australia’s aquaculture industry accounts for less than 1 per cent of the estimated US$160 billion global value of aquaculture production. Although this is small by global standards, Australia has a reputation for producing safe, sustainable, high-quality, and high-value aquaculture products. This results in endless opportunities for future development.

The National Aquaculture Strategy, which identifies the industry’s areas for improvement and achievable actions, outlines a list of priorities, one of which includes boosting public perception. This would be achieved through community programmes and national campaigns, and through the Australian Government-funded peak body Seafood Industry Australia, to help the industry position itself as professional and world-class.
Naturally, world-class performance in aquaculture is measured by world-class reliability. Given its environment, a reliable aquaculture setup serves as the life support of its high-value products, which is why it is absolutely critical to ensure 24/7 operation. Especially in intensive aquaculture, which includes operations with supplemental feeding and water aeration (such as prawn farming), where water must be replenished at a high rate to maintain oxygen levels and remove waste.
